I downloaded a utility outside of Firefox and now I end up with a bogus search that comes up whenever I open a tab.
I downloaded an extended download utility. Now, when I open a tab, "babylon search" comes up in the new tab. I can't seem to change it to my default, Google. It also put it in my upper right search bar, but I was able to change that back.
I have examined my add-ons and do not see it. I have looked at my plugins and do not see it.
It seems to me that if I knew how to configure a default for new tabs, I would be able to eliminate it.

hello P.R.Houtz, please make sure that you don't have any babylon related extensions or other suspicious entries like 3rd-party-toolbars presently installed under firefox > addons > extensions (babylon also might install some unwanted stuff that comes under the names "Browser Manager", "Browser Protector", "Bprotector", "Object Installer", etc.) or in the windows control panel > programs section.
afterwards install the search reset addon - it will revert the most common customziations those adware programs do in firefox back to the default: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/
