After each of the last three times that I have updated to Firefox 7, my computer was infected with malware or a virus. Is this just an odd coincidence or have other users had similar experiences?

Make sure that you only download and install updates from the official sites. On the internet there are also fake sites that give you malware with your update.

It's possible it was fake. However, the update didn't come from a website--it came from the same type of message box I get everytime Firefox is ready for an update. Are there also fake update message boxes? Is there a way to differentiate between the real and fake?

The normal update box uses a secure https connection to the mozilla update servers so that should be safe unless your computer is already infected or you changed some dangerous settings in about:config. Then I have no idea why it shows up after the update, that's really strange.

It is likely to be a hidden virus, using firefox to disguise itself. What anti virus software are you using?
