Action Console now opens each time I drag a photo from Firefox to menubar utility DropZone 4.

For many years, I've used a utility called DropZone in my menubar, which (among other things) allows documents to be automatically sorted into user-created locations (e.g., folders in the Finder).

Last night, suddenly, each time I drag a photo from Firefox to DropZone, a large window called "Action Console" opens, displaying a bunch of text. Here's a typical message that's displayed:

[Launching task with command line: runner.rb task-26498]

Task description file task-26498:

ACTION: "/Applications/- Misc. apps/Dropzone 4.app/Contents/Actions/Move Files.dzbundle" EVENT: "dragged" VARIABLE: "support_folder" "/Users/mervynwarren/Library/Application Support/Dropzone" VARIABLE: "dragged_type" "files" VARIABLE: "app_version" "4.80.66" VARIABLE: "apple_silicon" "1" VARIABLE: "os_version" "26.0.0" VARIABLE: "path" "/Users/mervynwarren/Pictures/iTunes art" VARIABLE: "tmp_folder" "/var/folders/7l/ldzhrwyx1v1dy2tky3c1_y640000gn/T/"

Determinate: 1 Begin_Message: Moving files... /Applications/- Misc. apps/Dropzone 4.app/Contents/Actions/lib/filecopy.rb:13:in `do_copy': undefined method `each' for nil:NilClass (NoMethodError) from /Applications/- Misc. apps/Dropzone 4.app/Contents/Actions/Move Files.dzbundle/action.rb:27:in `dragged' from /Applications/- Misc. apps/Dropzone 4.app/Contents/Actions/lib/runner.rb:77:in `call' from /Applications/- Misc. apps/Dropzone 4.app/Contents/Actions/lib/runner.rb:77:in `<main>'

[Task completed]

Ironically, although the last line says "Task completed," the task I was attempting to perform (moving a photo into a given folder) is in fact NOT comleted at all.

Further observations:

This behavior is not displayed in Safari. In Safari, images continue to be moved to the desired folder, as intended.

I googled "action console keeps opening in Firefox," and I performed 4 troubleshooting steps that google AI suggested (including launching Firefox into troubleshooting mode). Unfortunately, in troubleshooting mode, the behavior persists, which suggests that this has nothing to do with any add-ons.

I also created a new, test profile—but even in the test profile, the behavior persists.

So, I'm stumped. After years of using Firefox, this behavior has appeared out of nowhere—and I cannot figure out why, nor how to fix it.

Any further suggestions?

Hi,

It sounds like Firefox or DropZone 4 recently changed how drag-and-drop is handled, which is why the Action Console pops up now. Here are a few things you can try:

Update both apps – Make sure you’re running the latest versions of Firefox and DropZone 4. Updates sometimes fix these kinds of issues.

Check DropZone settings – Look for options related to showing the Action Console when dragging files. You may be able to disable it.

Test in Firefox Safe Mode – Restart Firefox with add-ons disabled to see if an extension is causing the console to appear.

Contact DropZone support – If it persists, it may be a recent bug or a change in DropZone’s behavior. They can confirm if there’s a fix or a workaround.

Hopefully one of these steps helps you get back to your usual workflow!

Thanks for the reply.

1. All of my apps are up to date.

2. There are no such settings in DropZone. As I mentioned, this occurs in Firefox, but not in Safari. If it were a setting in DropZone, the behavior would be the same with any browser.

3. As I mentioned, I tested Firefox in Safe Mode to no avail.

4. I have reached out to DropZone, but the fact that this behavior appeared suddenly in Firefox *only*—while Safari continues to behave as expected—seems to indicate an issue within Firefox. And if running Firefox in Safe Mode doesn't correct the behavior, that leaves me quite stumped as to what further steps to take.
