Why did I have to use Google to be able to access my Thunderbird account? I don't see that as protecting my privacy. Admittedly I haven't previously updated my Thunderbird password as often as I should but I don't see why it couldn't be used to enable Thunderbird on my new computer.

Technically, this is a question for Google, as Thunderbird does not have this requirement. However, this process does prevent someone from taking your profile and using it on another PC.
