Ever since I started to use Thunderbird (some years ago) I have made a folder for each contact into which I transfer incoming and sent messages once they have received my attention (by drag and drop). This has always worked perfectly until of recent months. I now find that, on occasions, when I transfer a message, it disappears from the Inbox or Sent but does not make it to the relevant folder. Thinking the folder might have been corrupted, I have even tried making up a new one with a similar (but not the same) title but still the message gets lost. I have also tried re-importing from the webmail but, once again, when trying to move the message from the Inbox to the folder, it disappears. Messages which were in the folder also disappear so it is not just new ones which are affected. This problem only occurs with some folders but by no means all of them. I have tried the remedy suggested in the tips but this has not worked either. Any ideas?

re :if I hit the "reply" button, access to the attachment immediately disappears.

Disappears from where ? The original received email should still have the attachment. Are you saying the original recieved email is losing attachments?

When you click on 'Reply' to respond - The attachment would not be attached in the 'Reply' Write window. This has been the case for a long time. Why ? because the person you are replying to was the person who sent you the attachment, so they do not need it sending back, they already have it.

If you chose 'Forward' then the attachment would be 'attached' because it is assumed you are not forwarding to the original sender - you would have used Reply for that. So you may be forwarding to someone who needs the attachment.

re : but the new folder had also disappeared!

Did you subscribe to see the newy created Folder? Right click on mail account folder and select 'Subscribe' - click on 'Refresh' - select the new folder - click on 'Subscribe' - click on OK.

Did you then check the Folder properties to ensure 'when getting new messages for this account, always check this folder' Did you check in Account Settings > Synchronisation & Storage to select that new folder to be included in full downloading emails?

re: If the switch to IMAP caused the problem, I would have expected all folders to react in the same way. Some of the affected folders were already on the system when I switched.

Please confirm: When you say "Some of the affected folders were already on the system when I switched." I believe you mean those folders were already created in the webmail account accessed via browser - so you coud not see them in Thunderbird because at the time you were using a POP account. Is that correct?

When you switched from POP to IMAP did you do this?

  • Delete the pop account from Thunderbird and then Create a new IMAP account in Thunderbird.

Or did you do this:

  • Access Account Settings and swap the server settings to imap server settings

What do you see when you go to this location: Right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Settings' It opens the Account Settings window Select 'Server Settings' Top right 'Server Type' does it say 'IMAP Mail Server' ?

I am sorry but I have been very busy of recent days and did not have the time to deal with what was more of an irritant than a major problem. However this now appears to be escalating. Earlier today I received a notification email from a delivery firm telling me my parcel was on its way. I clicked on the link therein to get more information. The email immediately disappeared and an adjacent one in my Inbox came up in red with an "Important" tag which I certainly had not knowingly instigated. This turn of events is very worrying as I am becoming uncertain about continuing to use Thunderbird.
