WidevineCdm crashes on Firefox 78.10 (Mac OS)

more options

WidevinCdm crashes. I have submitted multiple crash reports but not sure if any went through. There was no pop-up window or any field to describe the problem like what the 'Learn more..' link says when the crash occurs.

I have already seen other reports of this problem (e.g. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1334218 )

Crash seen on:

Firefox 78.10.0 Mac OS 10.9.5 (Can't upgrade further on existing HW)

I don't like the recommendation on the above URL to install an older version of Firefox. We never tell anyone to go back to old versions of our SW if the bug is created by the new version. For me, the crashes started right AFTER I upgraded Firefox to 78.10.0. I was watching CBS shows. So the crash has a definite connection to the Firefox upgrade. I haven't changed anything else on my MacBook. I had no problem watching the shows on previous versions of Firefox.

To reproduce the crash, try to watch a "free" CBS show ( e.g. https://www.cbs.com/shows/fbi/ ). No subscription needed for a few episodes available for free.

Attaching screenshot of my current WideVineCdm configuration settings. I did not install WideVineCdm at any time. It probably gets/got installed automatically after I uninstalled the Flash Plugin.

See:

The fix that 88.0.1 and 78.10.1 will get is about playing DRM protected content in HD when HDCPv1 is enforced. There is no fix possible for Mac OS X 10.9.5 users because Widevine CDM 4.10.2209.1 no longer supports this OS.

See comment 14:

I've seen some folks discussing this bug in the context of Widevine no longer working on MacOS 10.9 due to the CDM not supporting that OS version. To avoid ambiguity, I want to highlight that the MacOS compat issue is a separate issue from this and is tracked in bug 1706393.

The DRM knowledge base article has been updated.

Note: The current version of Google Widevine is no longer compatible with older macOS versions such as OS X 10.9 and 10.10. Only macOS versions 10.11 and above are supported.

Thanks for the update, cor-el. And the clarification about what the FF updates won't fix. Now I won't need to wait for a fix with bated breath.

But Sigh! More perfectly good HW going to be made obsolete soon because the "buy buy buy, throw throw throw" cycle must be sustained endlessly to help the economy and everyone's business models. :-(
