E-mail Messages disappearing/what's that red circle that looks like a "do not enter" sign?

I made an accidental key stroke(s) that marked some of my e-mails with a red circle with a line in it that looks like a "do not enter" traffic sign. I've never seen that symbol before and not only can I not find what it means, it resulted in those messages disappearing when I closed Thunderbird and re-opened it. Because I needed to retain one of the messages, I moved a reply I made to one of those messages from the sent folder to the inbox and that message disappeared too. I have no idea what happened, where the messages went, or how to get them back.

Did you right-click a message, Ignore Thread (keyboard shortcut K)? Select any message in the thread, then K, to undo the ignore command.
