Ever since I downloaded macOS Big Sur 11.1, the thumbnails on some websites (ie, banana republic) don't load. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?

Have you tried clearing the browser's cache? Maybe there's some corrupted data in the cache causing thumbnails not to load properly anymore. I also see you're on Firefox 84, so you have the latest version too.

Let's start with that. Let me know if on the next time your start Firefox if it appears all the thumbnails are blank or re-downloading for the New Tab page. That way we know it flushed the cache of those thumbnail images too. If I remember correctly, if you clear the cache for this area, all the thumbnails for your New Tab page will be blank & will have to be re-downloaded after visiting each custom New Tab tile once. Then it grabs a fresh thumbnail for each site.

If some download & others don't, we'd appreciate you listing which ones don't give a thumbnail. Might have to be something with the site in that case. But we can test those sites to see if that's the case.

Didn't solve the problem. I cleared my cache multiple times and restarted FireFox.

This is only an issue with one website: https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=1171836&style=1172540&nav=meganav%3AWomen%3ASpecial%20Offers%3A40%25%20Off%20Pants%20

When I log on to bananarepublic.gap.com, it loads fine. When I click on a page or section of that site, it loads, but no thumbnails and no text.

that website works for me. I get WebP images on that banana page if I check this in "Tools -> Page Info -> Media".

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, DuckDuckGo PE, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block content.

Firefox shows a purple shield instead of a gray shield at the left end of the location/address bar in case Enhanced Tracking Protection is blocking content. You can click shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection. You can check the Web Console for messages about blocked content.

You can try these steps in case of issues with webpages:

You can reload webpage(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies for websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Remove the Cookies" for websites that cause problems:

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Data"

"Clear the Cache":

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data -> Clear Data -> Cached Web Content: Clear

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Hello,

What is the setting to DISABLE thumbnails in Google search results, or ANY search engines. I have the opposite problem of most users here LOL.

I do NOT want to see thumbnails on any search results from any search engines. The closest solution I've found on these forums from back in 2013 no longer works (see below):

Do you mean the thumbnails that you see on the about:newtab page?

You can create these Boolean prefs on the about:config page to prevent Firefox from generating thumbnails for the about:newtab page.

   name: browser.pagethumbnails.capturing_disabled with value: true
   name: pageThumbs.enabled with value: false

You can right-click on the about:config page to open the right-click context menu and choose New > Boolean to create both prefs as a new Boolean type pref.

You need to delete the thumbnails folder in the Firefox profile folder to remove already stored web page thumbnails."

Thanks in advance for the assist! :-)
