Thunderbird version 60.9.0 (32-bit) Stops Responding while typing messages. If I wait long enough it will start responding again, however sometimes Thunderbird will close and I have to start over again. The problem began after a recent update which also caused Open office to do the same thing. I fixed open office by renaming the current user file to user_old and allowing Open Office to create a new user file. I am hoping the solution to this problem is as easy to fix as open office was.

What is your anti-virus software?

IObit Anti-Malware, Anti-Ransomware with Bitdefender Enabled IObit Smart Defrag 6 is also installed. The problem didn't start until a most recent Thunderbird update.

Does the problem go away?

OK, have been in Windows and Thunderbird Safe Mode for several hours now and it has not stopped responding. It even seems to be faster and responding better. So now we know it can be any one of a number of other things causing it............  :)

Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software, which is most likely the culprit. These are some generic suggestions to avoid problems with anti-virus software.

Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.

Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.

Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.

Keep it working. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird

And last but not least, backup your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile

If I don't allow my antivirus program to scan incoming mail, whats the sense in having the it at all?

I assume Bitdefender is the guilty program, do you have any recommendations for a free antivirus program that should be used instead?

You should still use your anti-virus real-time scanner. With the real-time scan turned on [which it is typically by default] it will scan all the files and attachments and will alert you if there is any infection. It just shouldn't scan the Thunderbird profile folder.

So I was able to recover all my old emails after an IObit Uninstall and Deep Clean. Thank You to those who helped.

I have since upgraded to TB 68.3.0 (32 bit) however the program still stops responding about every 5 minutes when I am typing a message. A bell goes ding, then a box pops up and says my message is being saved to the Drafts folder. The length of time varies but the program will start responding again after a 3 to 10 minutes. Closing out other programs does not seem to do anything. I have also had IObit looking to see if they can find an issue with their software Malware Fighter /Bitdefender

I thought TB had a new feature in it that automatically saves your work after a selected amount of time but I can't find the setting again. Perhaps I have it confused with open office but if I don't I am wondering if that could be causing the problem since the problem started after a TB update. In the trouble shooting section I found some basic information that I will post after this.

I have since upgraded to TB 68.3.0 (32 bit) however the program still stops responding about every 5 minutes when I am typing a message.

I think in this topic you've already been given all the information needed to deal with the 'Not responding' problem, with anti-virus software being most likely the culprit.

I thought TB had a new feature in it that automatically saves your work after a selected amount of time but I can't find the setting again.

At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button > Options - Composition - Auto Save every x minutes

I am wondering if that could be causing the problem since the problem started after a TB update.

It may be the trigger, but certainly not the root cause.

What is the size of your drafts folder?
