Thunderbird collects my emais from BTs server. Do the emails collected by Thunderbird reside on a different server and are they effectivelt protected from loss

There are no Thunderbird servers. Backups are your responsibility. Make new folders under the Local Folders account and copy the messages you want to keep there. Local Folders resides on your local drive and will not be affected when you delete the old account.
