My Firefox has been "upgraded". How do I get my old one back?

This new system is so annoying. In addition it threw out my toolbar bookmarks. I can't seem to get my email screen to fill the page. This is not an upgrade - it's a nightmare.

This morning my Mozilla Firefox was fine. I think I accidentally upgraded it when I was trying to solve another issue (inability to get into CNN - still can't get in). This version of Firefox doesn't automatically save drafts - a big problem for me and the screen is entirely different now - another big problem. About a third of the screen is wasted space that could be used for the body of emails. Not to mention CNN and my inability to open attachments - opening attachments was what started all of this.

What happens when you try to access CNN? What link are you using?

What do you mean; save drafts ?

Hello,

In order to better assist you with your issue please provide us with a screenshot. If you need help to create a screenshot, please see How do I create a screenshot of my problem?

Once you've done this, attach the saved screenshot file to your forum post by clicking the Browse... button below the Post your reply box. This will help us to visualize the problem.

Thank you!

First I typed responses to your questions; then I went to screenshot and when I returned my message to you had been deleted.

So I'll try again. When I open the CNN website, the little circle just goes around and around. At the same time, I'm locked in and locked out at the same time. The only way I have found to get out is to literally turn my computer off. Same thing happens with MSNBC. Other websites seem to be fine. This wasn't the case until today.

Saving drafts. In the past when I was composing an email, it was automatically saved in drafts (left sidebar). That way if I accidentally deleted the email or screwed up whatever I was writing, a draft was available (automatically) for reference. If you've ever spent a great deal of time composing something and it suddenly disappears, you'll understand.

I don't believe a screenshot would help with my issues. I just don't like the new and improved look of Firefox. CNN is something different but since it locks me out, I can't do a screenshot.

Hmm. On my provider, I have to press the save Button. For the time being, use a text editor. Then copy / paste.

CNN; sounds like the site is being blocked.

Make sure toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.

  • "3-bar" menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars
  • View > Toolbars
You can tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar
  • Right-click empty toolbar area

Open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • "3-bar" menu button > Customize
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette to the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window to the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button in the Customize palette window to restore the default toolbar set.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Nothing is working. I dumped the cookies, etc. In fact, it seems to be getting worse. I'm hanging it up for today. I just can't deal with it now. My mind has turned to mush.

If there is still a problem, create a new user profile. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

I take it the new profile is working without problem, yes?

When you are ready, we can start moving parts of your old data and Copy it to the new profile.

First; open your file browser to the New profile;

Type about:support in the address bar and press enter.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Second, open the file browser to the Old profile.

You should see it on the directory "tree" in the first file browser. Right click on that folder and select Open In New Window.

Warning ! ! Only Copy the files you are told. We will avoid anything that might be the cause of your problems. Here is the list of files;

I am computer illiterate. The suggestions above might as well be in a foreign language. The issue (endlessly revolving little circle) has now moved to and is slowing or stopping my email access. The following is the message that prints out:

Warning: Unresponsive Script Script: https//pixel.ad safe protected. . .e_ previews=$!(IAS_TURN_PREVIEW):114

Three Clicking Choices: Continue Debug Script Stop Script

At one time or another I have tried clicking on all of them.

Also, the parentheses in the "script" are fancy little squiggly ones.

Does this help you understand the issue better? I am now corresponding via my little Acer Notebook.

Hi, sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Note that not all removal programs will detect all malware, so you may need to run several or all of them.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one. Windows 8 has antivirus built-in already.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us. Thank you!

I tried opening three of these websites. Then they just sat there doing nothing. My screen was filled with pages of computer gibberish.

Firefox 44+ accepts a new kind of encoding (compression) called Brotli for secure connections and Facebook turned on Brotli encoding last night. Kaspersky doesn't know about this encoding and strips it from the HTTP response headers if you have "Inject script" checked in Kaspersky Settings -> Additional -> Network -> Traffic Processing https://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?s=bbdfcf797a91bc90230472c52c4b103e&showtopic=351027

Thanks for getting back to. But, again, you are speaking a language I don't understand. I have no idea what those references to Broti, Firefox 44+, inject script and Facebook (I don't do Facebook) have to do with my issue. With computer issues you must see your self with a graduate degree and me still in kindergarten.

I don't know if it was something we did yesterday or if it's just a 24 hour miracle but everything seems to be working normally now. Hallejulah!!

Now my main issue is how to get rid of those annoying top and sidbar ads and not just temporaily - permanently. I'm open to suggestions. Until the "improved" the system, it was easy.

Thanks for your help yesterday.
