My inbox shows 30 messages and the the totals says 222; where are the extra unseen messages?

Have you selected: 'View ' > Folders' > 'All'

If you select that view, is the count correct?

I'm using a Mac and your suggestion doesn't seem to tell me much. I would like to know where these ghost messages are. Thanks.

But have you set View|Folders|All?

View|Folders|Unified, for instance, gives me similar results to what you describe. View|Folders|Unread would hide previously-read messages.
