This happens after I am in my second or third game. Chess.com has exhausted their help on this issue. I can play games with chess.com in Chrome with no problems. The problem is only on Firefox.

Open Firefox and play contents that should play sound: an HTML5 video with audio track in this Firefox videos page, a Flash sound, etc.

Click the volume icon in the Windows task bar.
Make sure the Mute checkbox is not checked and slider is not at the bottom.

Check your audio device

Make sure that the audio device (such as speakers or headphones) are turned on and connected to the computer properly. Other solutions

Check out whether other applications on your computer can play sounds. If they can't:

Follow Microsoft's No sound in Windows tutorial.

If Firefox is the only application that you can't hear sound in:

Try the solutions in Fix common audio and video issues.

it is not one of these simple intuitively obvious issues. it is a much deeper problem with Firefox and chess.com

Any chance those chess games use Flash? I have never used that website and don't see a way of trying a game without going through registration.

You have 3 different Flash plugins installed for Firefox. Shockwave Flash 15.0 r0 Shockwave Flash 13.0 r0 Shockwave Flash 12.0 r0

And the newest is out of date. 16.0 r0 235 is the latest version for Firefox. BTW, Chrome uses a different version of Flash than is needed for Firefox.

First, grab the Adobe uninstaller from here: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

Then download the latest Flash Plugin version [when using Firefox] from here: https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html

Run the Flash uninstaller program, then reboot your PC. Then install the Plugin version of Flash. So you'll have a clean installation of Flash for Firefox.

i have come to the conclusion that this problem is not fixable. none of your suggestions worked. none of the suggestions from the tech at chess.com worked. this problem has only surfaced for about the last month. chess.com used to work great in Firefox but not anymore. every thing else works OK in Firefox. I'll just run chess.com in Chrome even though Firefox was better. but that's it.
