Through just any general use and seemingly random times during use/loaing/interacting with pages firefox will freeze and I can still move my mouse but can't go to any other windows program (but can still hear audio for a moment) then after about 3 seconds my mouse stops moving and audio cuts out and I have to hard reset. Only been happening recently and only ever happens while using Firefox.

Using Windows 7.

Just froze with latest drivers 390.65 for my GTX1070 with around 7 tabs open while looking at google maps. I then turned hardware acceleration off and went back to google maps satellite/3d view and froze again so it actually must be the content process limit of 4 causing the crash. It could be a mixture of both so I am going to run with hardware acceleration off and content process limit of 2 since I haven't crashed with those settings and wait to see if there's any fixes.

Hello,

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

Did this fix the problem? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

How long from when you start the browser and the is a problem?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Was just using Firefox in Safe Mode for about an hour and my computer froze while using google maps.

It has previously frozen while not in safe mode on: Google Maps An Osu! map page Google Images and some others I don't remember.

go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> Options --> Privacy & Security panel and under Permissions check (put a tick in the box) the setting to Prevent Accessibility Services from accessing your browser.

Monitor in Task Manager. Should stay below 2 gigs. If excessive then do below and monitor and change if need to...Test and go up again , go back down, it will eventually get a zone you and it can live with.

Go to the 3 Bar Menu then Options --> General --> Performance and untick everything. change the recommended size lower then see how it runs. Note: 1 = No Multiprocessor = slow again. Try 2 Restart Firefox after making these changes please.

Note : Hardware Acceleration is for Video Card, Monitor to see if remain off or to turn back on.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Refresh feature didn't work, just froze while opening a youtube video with a google images tab open and 4 others. I had Prevent Accessibility Services ticked. Going to try the performance options.

Well first off what is interesting is when you were in Safe Mode it would freeze up that to me would indicate a O/S as the starting point for the problem. That would only then continue onto other software. If your O/S is already having problems in Safe Mode then that is where you should start looking. That's how I see it starting.

Please use my previous suggestion. It is the fix for the issue you are having.

Yes I have changed the performance options and changed it to 2 instead of the default 4 and it hasn't frozen yet.

@WestEnd it was the firefox program being run in safe mode not my entire OS.

I have found it was the hardware acceleration that causes the freeze and it could possibly be my graphics drivers. I had the nvidia driver version 36*.** before I was freezing and I think it was around the time I updated to 388.71 that I started freezing on firefox. I am going to update to 390.65 to see if I can run hardware acceleration again without freezing.

That was very good work. Well done.

I also had this problem and after deep research I found the cause of this is "Hardware Acceleration" when enabled.
