“Scan QR code” button does nothing in Thunderbird for Android 23.0

I’m trying to import my email accounts from Thunderbird on Linux into Thunderbird for Android 23.0. On my Google Pixel, tapping “Scan QR code” briefly highlights the button, but nothing else happens. The camera view never opens and no error appears.

Camera permission is granted. Thunderbird is up to date, and force-stopping and restarting the app did not help. Has anyone encountered this or found a workaround?

Hi Peter

Can you install the beta version linked below and see if the QR code scanner opens. No need to remove your current install. The beta can exist along side it. It contains a fix for "QR code scanner failed to open when no accounts were configured (#11276)"

Do you suggest that I just stay on the beta version or should I switch to the release version after some time?

It's a personal preference. For most people, i'd recommend using the stable branch. Beta versions by their nature may contain bugs that get fixed ahead of general release.

You can use the beta and return to the stable branch once version 24 reaches the app stores. App settings and accounts can be imported directly from the beta into the stable version.

In fact, if you wanted, you could do this now with the current stable version.

  1. Scan your accounts into the beta version and complete any sign-in steps.
  2. Open the stable version
  3. Select import K-9 settings
  4. Select import from app
  5. Select Thunderbird beta
  6. Complete any sign-in steps requested
  7. Remove the beta
