Pop/SMTP for Office365 account works with TB in Windows 10 but not in Linux Mint Cinnamon 19 despite sharing the profile - any ideas?

I have a dual boot machine that works well. I share the Thunderbird profile between Windows 10 and Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon desktop. This has worked well but recently, one of my accounts was migrated to Office365. I got the POP/SMTP connection working well in Windows 10 but it fails to connect in Linux Mint. It hangs for a long while and then, with no error message, stops trying.

Has anyone had this problem or does anyone have any ideas about what's going wrong?

try creating an SMTP log... might shed some light.
