I had used pop on two accounts. The pop3 account allowed me to retain email on server indefinitely. when I switched one e-mail to IMAP, i noticed I only have one trash folder -- on the IMAP. When I tried to create Trash on the POP I was told I already had a trash folder but I noticed that my deleted e-mails were not there. Now I've switched both to IMAP

One thing it certain. You can not change and existing account to IMAP or to POP. it has to be selected when the account is added.

I just tried logging on after changing the account back to Pop3. Now I get a message "failed to login to IMAP". Now I can't GET emails on that account.

Not solved. I created a new pop3 account under a different profile after I recovered a backup to a date when I'm sure my original was a POP account. Folder and content structure was still there, but account remains IMAP . I can only drag a very small number of messages from IMAP to new POP.
