will not open write window - will work in safe mode but not in normal use
It started yesterday - no changes to the computer at all. Running windows 10 64 bit. When I tried to write an email the write window wouldn't open. It is shown on the task bar but nothing will make it appear. I reinstalled Thunderbird after doing a registry edit to remove all references to Thunderbird and Mozilla but still the same. I then disabled all addons - still no luck. When I run it in safe mode it works fine.

thanks fr the clue. I tried to edit everything out of registry and reinstall but same result as soon as I copied my profile from the backup. I then copied just the mail file from the backed up profile, reinstalled a clean version of Thunderbird and then copied the mail file into the newly created profile. It now works - obviously the problem was in the backed-up profile. Your hint about the screwed up addon removal was the key.

Are you using the default thunderbird theme or one you downloaded ?
Are you using Hardware acceleration ? To switch it off: 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Advanced' > 'General' tab or via Menu Bar : 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Advanced' > 'General' tab uncheck 'Use hardware aceleration when available' click on OK.
Confirm you are using default theme and hardware aceleration is switched off.

I came across this before, but it was an addon on that occasion.
This almost sounds like maybe an addon was causing the issue, but despite removing the addon, some part may not have been fully removed and is still causing an issue.
For each addon extension, did you disable first and then remove? What addon extensions did you have before you removed them?
