Cleared my cache & now my passwords are gone. Can I get them back? Why did this happen & how do I prevent this?

I'm on Mac OSX Lion and Firefox 42. Had to clear my cache the other day and it appears to have also dumped all of my passwords. Why would this happen? Is there any way to get my passwords back?

How did you clean the cache? That should not effect passwords.
