Firefox Mac has lost ability to download

In recent days Firefox Mac 38.0.5 seems to have lost the ability to "Save link as...". The downloads show as "Failed".

I have disabled add-ons sequentially, cleared the cache, run in Safe Mode, adjusted suggested details like proxy settings: nothing works. I really don't want to have to go the "Refresh" route, which seems to trash all my settings.

Help please?

Hello Etnier, use the Profile Manager to create a new Firefox profile and see if that works.
