I am unable to read e-mail message without totally opening it. There are 3 sections now and before only had two. The middle one is new and nothing that means anything to me. How do I get back to 2 sections: list and message?

Just guessing at what you are seeing. Are you seeing the Message Pane below your folder pane and email listings? If you want to turn that off press F8. F8 toggles the Message Pane on and off.

If that is not it, post a screen shot so we can see what you are talking about.
