First of all update to a current and supported Firefox 20. Then post back if you still have problems.

My suggestion is to right-click the hyperlink and use Save Link As... and save the ZIP file. Then open that ZIP file with WinZip (or other program).

It would be interesting to know what the application is that only works with Firefox 5.

I am wondering whether either there is an alternative with similar functionality or whether it may be possible to force the application to run with a current & secure Release of Firefox.

Running Firefox 5 is leaving you horrible unstable and insecure, I agree with John99, what is it that doesn't allow you to update? Most programs, if they work with Firefox 5, will work with Firefox 20

If the file extension is missing or there is a wrong file extension then you need to add the correct file extension yourself and rename already downloaded files.

Remember Windows may show, all, none, or only some known file extensions, depending on your settings.
