when in gmail and "insert photo" is selected, there are 2 photos that are always in the window. This was not always the case, but now I cannot get them deleted
As stated above, there are 2 photos that are always present in the "Insert Photo" window on my PC. These weren't always there.....at one time the window was just blank. I have no idea how they got there. (obviously, at one time they had been selected for insertion). I cannot find a way to get them deleted from the default "Insert Photo" window.

That looks like a default windows box not the one folder your would attach from. Did you also contact gmail about this as since this is their email program?
IDK what is being brought up for that window... a gmail function or a Firefox function; how do you tell the difference?
As stated, those photos weren't always there. Somehow, they got plugged in, but I dont know how and don't see a way to get them off. Similarly, if a person wanted to place a group of oft-uploaded photos, how would they add them to that window?

That's a gMail thing. You must have clicked on the 'Insert Image' icon in the gMail.
I just tested it, and it showing some images from long ago that I uploaded. Probably on Google Drive, I suppose. You'd have to go there and manage your images/photo on Google Drive.
Normally, I just drag-n-drop images off my computer directly into the gMail Compose window.

Think I got it figured out. Looked on Google Drive; those photos weren't there. But, they were in Google Photos. Deleted them. Now the window that appears when "Insert Photo" is selected in gmail, has this message about no photos in Google Photos; see pic.
So, I dont know what changed from the previous settings a time ago. IIRC, the selection in the window defaulted to "Upload" rather than "Photos" at the top row.
Thanks Pj for steering me in the right direction. gatz
