My emails are not coming in for a very long time when I know someone has sent me one...why are they so slow in coming in and can I change a setting to fix this?

I've been trying to get a code to a app that I forgot and they send it to me and by the time it gets in my inbox the number is no longer viable because it took too long to get to me! Why is my mail coming so slow when I know it has just been sent to me?

Thunderbird is only an email client that downloads from the server. Thunderird has no control over how long an email takes to arrive on server.

So, you first need to determine whether the email has actually arrived on the server.
