There used to be a tickbox or something in the top left of the message header that just let you display From and nothing else. It's gone in 38.2.0. And now some headers take up half the damn message area.

Yes, View->Headers->Normal is selected and Compact is ticked.

View->Headers->Normal This is the standard reduced headers in Thunderbird, which shows these: From, Subject, To, plus Cc, Bcc, Reply-to depending upon email.

What you are describing sounds like you used an addon extension. Perhaps that addon extension is disabled or not up to date or simply not maintained to work with Thunderbird. check your addons: Tools > Addons or Menu icon > addons
