I use Firefox which seamlessly interfaces with iGoogle, but iGoogle is due to be withdrawn, so what do I need to do to prepare for this change?

I am not a sophisticated user - don't use apps (what are they anyway??) I just want to know what to do come November when my Firefox page, nicely integrated with iGoogle, doesn't work any more? Will I still have tabs directing me to gmail? What about Google maps?

App is short for "application". You hear it used most frequently in the context of a mobile device, but there also are web apps that run in your browser.

You can find a lot of sites that want to be your new home page. The best choice for you really depends on how you use iGoogle. For example, do you rely on a stock updater? weather? integrated calendar? I don't have any personal recommendations for you, but if you search around a bit you will find lots of review and endless comparisons. For example: Three Alternatives to Your iGoogle Home Page | PCWorld.

Or you might find that you can just use the standard Google home page at https://www.google.com/.
