Do any of the solutions in Sort your bookmarks to quickly find the ones you want work? Namely 'Sort by name'?

To automatically keep your Bookmarks and Folders sorted, you might consider using the add-on SortPlaces. I use it and never worry about the alphabetical order of my Bookmarks and Folders. You just need to get the settings to suit your tastes in the Options for SortPlaces.

I can't get all of my bookmarks in alphabetical order either and I find it utterly preposterous that something as simple as organizing bookmarks turns into a cumbersome search over the internet.

What is maddening is that there is something in Firefox that will alphabetize your bookmarks, but only in half-ass fashion leaving you to scratch your head and ask the question, "what were they thinking?"

What I mean by half-ass is that when I go to "Organize Bookmarks..." highlight the bookmarks menu and then select Views-->Sort-->By name I find that the book marks are not in order after I am done. Why have these buttons if they clearly will not work. I plan to video tape this and put it on YouTube to expose the utter stupidity in something that ought to be trivial.

Has anyone ever considered the case where a user has so many bookmarks that they NEED to be in alphabetical order?

Every computer on the planet organizes ALL files and ALL directories in order. So, tell me, where is the logic in the way Firefox organizes their bookmarks (seems to be chronological)? Chronological might be okay for a small number of bookmarks (like five or so) or recently bookmarked pages, but I have hundreds of bookmarks!

There's a reason why we alphabetize things. How does one find a book in a library?

In Firefox I have organized bookmarks in a directory (and I think this might even work), but this still doesn't address the issue I have with needing to have EVERY file and EVERY folder in ALPHABETICAL order! WTF? This is just idiocy.

That menu is called Views for a reason because it is only meant for viewing purposes and to display the bookmarks in a different sort order. The bookmarks are not sorted permanently if you set a sort order via the Views menu. If you want to sort bookmarks then you need to right-click a folder and choose "Sort by Name"

Every computer on the planet sorts ALL files and ALL directories in ORDER, automatically.

When people have a large number of things to store, books, CDs, computer files, they put them in order, often alphabetical order.

I have hundreds of bookmarks and it is difficult to find these bookmarks because they cannot be put in alphabetical order. Yes, I know that the contents of each folder, an individual folder, can be put in order, but I need the folders themselves to also be put in order. Every computer on the planet can do this. There is no good reason why bookmarks cannot also be placed in alphabetical order. The lack of this feature is just asinine.

I'll video tape the issue and put it on YouTube. I think most would agree how lame this is.

You can look at this extension:

ABSOLUTELY AGREE!!!!!!!! Ridiculous. Don't care about organising within each folder, but want folders in alphabetical order so I can easily find them. Cannot believe this is not possible. Just spent hours getting them ordered but doesn't change them permanently. Waste of time. Come on Firefox, sort it out.

It doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to create a system so we could choose to permanently sort our bookmark files alphabetically the same as we do our bookmarks. It would save the users time & frustration having the bookmark menu more organized since we have to access the folders before we do the bookmarks in them. Most other file types like music or photos allow you to choose how you "view" the files, and that's fine for the bookmarks themselves. But it's ridiculous to have to go through the "viewing" process for a temporary sort of the bookmark folders. Come on Firefox, can't you help us out here?

karmita92,

That is the function of extensions like Sort Places, to add features that Mozilla didn't include in Firefox to begin with. Firefox includes the basics that like 95% of their users will need, then extension developers create extensions that "extend" the basic functions provided.

I suspect that you didn't carefully read this support article that was linked in this thread back on June 22, 2010.
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Sorting%20bookmarks - look under Sorting by name and you'll see that "alpha sorting" is done in the Bookmarks Sidebar, not in the "Library" window.

A few tips:
1. If you want to sort all your bookmarks alphabetically, you need to "sort" the Bookmarks Menu folder.
2. The "sort" will stop at a horizontal "separator", which allows the user to sort only a specific group of bookmarks if they want only some sorted or to have multiple groups of alpha sorts.
3. The sort order is folders first, followed by bookmarks that are in the Bookmarks Menu folder ("loose Bookmarks").

BTW, the "Organize Bookmarks" menu item is changed to " Show All Bookmarks" in the upcoming Firefox 4.0 version. Hopefully that will lessen the misunderstandings about the Library window Views menu, which doesn't "organize bookmarks" permanently.

I've added SortPlaces 1.7.2 and this seems to be working.

For my preference in the Bookmarks menu I removed horizontal separators

so that every folder appears in alphabetical order. I achieved this by placing

the cursor over the horizontal line (separator) and then right-clicking cut

(delete might work as well).

This is the same link as above, but I'll reproduce it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/sortplaces/
