I use Thunderbird on a Mac, where Gmail is my default email. When I try to send an email, it often takes 10 tries before it goes through, due to timeouts. How can I fix this?

Sorry, I should've replied earlier. It's working again now, so I forgot.

It worked well for two years and then went bad for two months. The main problem was when I was trying to send mail between two of my Gmail accounts. Other people's addresses weren't as bad.

I didn't try to make the changes recommended above, and then the problem seemed to disappear on its own. It's not perfect yet, but it's much closer. Which makes me wonder if Gmail was having some internal problems.

Timeouts are often caused by server faulty input. Gmail / thunderbird , gmail is quite sensitive with smtp settings. One wrong number or mismatch will do the trick to hang for moments. Try to setup that smtp settings click correctly.

Thanks. I forgot to mention: everything worked great until about two months ago, and that's when it started slowing down. I don't understand what you said, so is there something I can look at to walk me through what I have to do, and where?

Antivirus Do you have an antivirus program installed? If so, try disabling the email scanning feature. Also, have you tried starting your email client in troubleshoot mode? Do the emails you are trying to send contain large attachments?or do you already received messages with such attachment’s , try to delete them from the inbox.

I want to warn you about Gmail; it is sensitive to configuration issues. You really need to check your SMTP settings to ensure everything is filled out correctly. Using troubleshoot mode repairs certain software components and disables add-ons and extensions.

If you are unable to send mail, the issue might have been caused by one of these add-ons or extensions. What are your thoughts on this situation, and have you checked for other possible issues, such as a full inbox or hard drive problems?

What is the exact error code or message you receive?Have you already verified your SMTP settings?

If the integration fails, terminate the software connection. Then, isolate the root cause of the error, and set both software programs to oauth2.0 to fix. Than reconnect both software programs again.

Tip Can you disable outgoing email scans please?(in antivirus).

Usually, port 587 uses STARTTLS and port 465 uses TLS/SSL. These are used to create an encrypted tunnel.

It might be mixed up somehow.
