I’m not sure I understand how Thunderbird works re security: data & its storage; or transmission.
Presently, my understanding is that T is simply an intermediary between EM & other providers (or servers) & the data is always stored on my computer unless I choose not to retain & store the data on my computer. U keep no data on ur servers. When u gather em, address book, calendar, etc. info from my providers of these services, U simple access that info with my permission & my credentials for the particular acct. How do U secure that info & is any of it kept by U; or is it destroyed; or is it sent each time from me to you in a secure fashion so u can perform the necessary operation by securely transmitting the obtained info pursuant to an encrypted transmission from their servers to my computer where it is decrypted & all the info is manipulated & stored. No info remains in ur possession when the process is done.
Is this correct? If not, Pls elucidate how the process works re u as the client for such info.

- Thunderbird is software on your computer. It is not some cloud based product. It and all of it's data is held on your computer.
- on startup the product will "phone home" as it were to look for updates, but that process involves only sending sufficient information about your install to determine if an update is available, locate it and commence the download. Things like 32 or 64 bit operating system and version, Thunderbird version, addons installed and their versions
- Your passwords are stored in your device in an encrypted file. Additional security for that file in the form of a master password is available if you choose to use it. Most people do not
- Once installed all interactions with regard to mail occur between your installed copy of Thunderbird and your mail provider. The developer has no involvement at all in the process. So passwords are transmitted to the mail provider from your computer.
- connection security is decided by your mail provider. most choose to use TLS or STARTTLS and in those cases Thunderbird uses encrypted communications with the mail server. If the provider chooses that the encryption level for the connection should be none, then it is none. The mail client (any mail client) has no choice in this.
