Is it me, or does the new flash player work horribly on FF28?

It's something I've noticed since I updated FF back in early March; for weeks I noticed an issue, youtube videos were choppy, slower than I remember them being. The video or audio never lagged, but video was not smooth at all. Granted, I know sometimes it's the video itself, but then I ran comparisons with FF, Chrome and Opera, the latter two had no apparent issues. So I figured something was going on with FF. Last week I updated to the new version of Flash player(13, I think it is?). Didn't work. So I uninstalled/reinstalled. Suddenly, not only did yt vids not play very smoothly, now whenever I jump to a previous or later part of the video, the youtube screen is either black for a few seconds, and then the video just looks horrendous, full of pixels and such until it reverts in 2-3 seconds.

I tried resetting FF, seemed to flash the black screen and pixels, but not my previous problem. So I uninstalled/reinstalled flash player again. Same issue came back.

I had to look for a plug-in that made yt vids run via HTML5 instead of Flash. And now I have no issues. But I still have the problem if I'm watching an embedded yt video on another site.

It's very annoying and I don't have this issue in Chrome or Opera. Is there maybe a conflicting issue because I did not do a clean install?(which, I later found out that that is what I probably should have done.) Now I'm nervous that It's going to cause some issues down the road.

And honestly, I only noticed the former issue since last month. So I suspect FF28 is causing this, I don't remember this going on with 27/27.1

Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See this article for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).

To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:

  1. Go to this Adobe Flash Player Help page.
  2. Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
  3. Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
  4. Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel.

The image "fpSettings1.PNG" does not exist.
  5. Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.
  6. Click Close to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
  7. Restart Firefox.

This Flash Player Help - Display Settings page has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.

Does this solve the problem? Let us know.

It resolves my problem, but now I notice videos on youtube act almost exactly like how Firefox did on Opera. Videos get choppy at times, not very smooth playback.

I'm not sure what else to do.

Try disabling hardware acceleration for Firefox

Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Disabled it on Firefox only, does the same issue when it runs via flash instead of HTML 5.

I've been trying to not update my GPU driver because the last few updates messed with my copy of Photoshop.

I honestly just want to reformat this whole thing entirely :/

Do you think uninstalling/reinstalling flash player will do anything?

Do you still have this problem in Safe Mode? If you don't, it's most likely one of your extensions/plugins. You can troubleshoot your plugins by entering Safe Mode. Follow the directions below to enter it:

  • Click Help > Restart with add-ons disabled
  • Click Start in Safe Mode in the dialog box that comes up.

If you don't see the problem occurring, it's one of your extensions. You should first disable all extensions then re-enable them one by one to find out which is causing this issue.
