I've looked at all the old topics where opening a site by entering a URL into the Windows Run box or clicking a shortcut invariably results in "Go to a website" greyed-out appearing in the address bar instead of the actual URL.

Again, disabling anything does... not... work.

And, for example, griping to a plugin provider such as Real also does... not... work.

Look over my troubleshooting list and tell me if I'm missing something here.

Hi

For me disabling the real player plugin solve the problem, but if it doesn't work for you go to Firefox help > Troubleshooting Information > reset Firefox .

Have you checked that your plug-ins are up-to-date? 23 plug-ins is quite a pile and maybe a few too many. To check this, go to the Mozilla Plugin Check site.

Once you're there, the site will check if all your plug-ins have the latest versions. If you see plug-ins in the list that have a yellow Update button or a red Update now button, please update these immediately.

To do so, please click each red or yellow button. Then you should see a site that allows you to download the latest version. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation and follow the steps mentioned in the installation procedure.

Let us know if it helps.

Regards

The only one fitting that description when I read your post was QuickTime, and updating it did NOT solve the issue. Most of them have the "unknown" designation. I guess I'll have to go through all of them and routinely update or at least verify them, but it's not going to happen for at least a day.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

You can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

When running "firefox.exe -safe-mode [site]", the URL appears.

When removing the "RealDownloader" plugin, the URL appears in normal mode.

I won't miss that plugin... it still passes URL info to Real even in private tabs.
