A senior tech specialist employed by my ISP told me that Firefox will soon no longer be available since they can't compete with Chrome. I am mortified since I love Firefox but I'm wondering if it is true. I've encountered several websites which do not work properly with Firefox but work fine with Chrome. Examples of sites where I can no longer use Firefox and the problem(s) I encounter are the following: shop disney- can't log in; shutterfly - can't log in; my webmail - can read the email but can't send or reply;my local newspaper - can't do anything such as, reading the digital edition or place ads.

Can someone please tell me Firefox is not going to become obsolete? Also, why do I have all of the above problems when I use Firefox?

Thanks!

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, DuckDuckGo PE, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block content.

Firefox shows a purple shield instead of a gray shield at the left end of the location/address bar in case Enhanced Tracking Protection is blocking content. You can click shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection. You can check the Web Console for messages about blocked content.

You can try these steps in case of issues with webpages:

You can reload webpage(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies for websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Remove the Cookies" for websites that cause problems:

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Data"

"Clear the Cache":

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data -> Clear Data -> Cached Web Content: Clear

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Dont worry. FireFox is not going away. But it is transforming into something that the other browsers are not.

FireFox is a non profit, aka not for profit, organization. And it is being funded by the generousity of the wealthy and organizations like the Ford Foundation.

So FireFox is not designed/engineered to make money, aka profits. But the other browsers are and do make money by spying on your internet activities and tracking you. This information is then shared and shared and shared by the greedy corporations.

As such, FF is being designed to protect your privacy and your money. So there are many sites that dont readily work with the newly engineered FF. The issues can be the caused by FF blocking sneaky websites. Or it can be do to webpage designs that are viewable on money making browsers but not on FF.

But in time, things will improve especially since Apple has also announced a war on information pirates.

In the meantime, do not worry. FireFox is here to stay. If you have any issues with FF, we are here for helping you. But keep in mind, that FF is a work in progress and there are new things that are being implemented but do not always work well for 100% of the users.

In regards to that IT specialist that caused you a sleepless night? Just say "Really? Thats interesting. You're truly a genius. Thanks"  :-)
