How do I recover passwords deleted in last Firefox update?

more options

Greetings All, as a consequence of the last update of Firefox (16/1/21) I have lost all my passwords and bookmarks! I have deleted and reinstalled the program and was able to retrieve 6 passwords (that are more than 8 months old) the rest are missing. I have read and attempted to follow the instructions about the logins.json code without any luck. My system won't allow me to rename the file, there are as far as I can see no other corrupt versions of such a file. I have already spent fruitless hours on this. I have lost all my social media access as a consequence, lost my access to on-line learning and numerous other important access points. Can anyone help? Please! Yes, I am running AVG and something similar happened last year but on that occasion a fix from AVG solved the problem quickly. What can I do?

Were saved logins the only data lost during the update? Just wondering whether your Firefox might have started a new profile. Here are some places to check for an old profile (depending on what you deleted):

(1) Desktop => Old Firefox Data

When Firefox performs a Refresh, your current profile folder is moved here. Can you find a folder like this? If so, how recent are its contents?

(2) About Profiles page

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

This page should list at least one profile and could list many. (Each profile has two folders and one or more buttons. Do not use any Remove buttons!)

The profile that Firefox is currently using will have this:

This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted.

Do you have another profile listed on this page? If so, you can check whether it is the one you were using recently by clicking its Launch profile in new browser button.

If it isn't what you were using, simply close that new window.

If it IS what you were using and you prefer to use that profile, back on the about:profiles page, click the Set as default profile button for that profile so Firefox uses it automatically at the next startup.

Anything interesting in either of those places?

Thank you jscher2000

I do have a file on my desk top from when I deleted and re-installed firefox yesterday (i.e. the day after the update) this has the following file.

zyk6lwmx.default-release/addons.json. It doesn't appear to have anything in it.

I have tried the profile fix yesterday to no joy but I will give it another go.

Profile solution no use, there is nothing in the passwords menu.

Hi, unfortunately addons.json won't help, it would need to be logins.json and the companion key4.db file together. Is there anything else in the

Old Firefox Data \ zyk6lwmx.default-release

folder? For example, does it contain the bookmarkbackups folder? If so, check inside to see what files are there.
