I recently updated to Mozilla 48.0.2 and also refreshed. By doing that for whatever reason my logins.json file has been deleted. I did have a previous refreshed Mozilla folder with the logins.json and key3 among the rest of the files and so I copied and pasted the two files back in the updated Mozilla folder. I opened Mozilla and the passwords were there and it worked great until I closed Mozilla. The logins.json file was deleted by Mozilla automatically.. I have tried to do the process again with the same result. I have uninstalled Mozilla and tried installing fresh but no difference. Why isn't the logins.json file not kept in the folder by MOZILLA? The file continuously gets deleted upon the closure of Mozilla. It's got me baffled. Please help as I have too many passwords to start from scratch..

Try adding those files when Firefox is closed. And then open Firefox.

I have closed Firefox and added the files but it makes no difference. After adding the logins.json file and key3 file in the Mozilla folder, I open Firefox and the passwords are all there and I can use them while Firefox is open. Once I close and reopen Firefox the logins.json file has been deleted again..

On the password issue, let's try this;

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

After closing Firefox, open it in Safe Mode again. Is the problem still there?

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

I do have Advanced SystemCare but I never used the Surfing protection. I actually at the end restored my computer with a System Image I had done a couple of weeks ago. I did lose some passwords but the majority I still have and now Mozilla is working as usual. It pays to have System Images of your computer. Good luck to anyone who has this same problem..

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.
