For some odd reason, the back button on my Firefox installation no longer works normally. I can still right-click on it to choose previous websites. But it is greyey out at all times with no way to select it with a normal left-click.

I have refreshed Firefox and the problem still persists.

It turns out there was something in conflict with the openSUSE repo's mozilla repository. I deleted the repository and went back to the original repository in openSUSE.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
