How can I set up sync if I do not have the other device near me?

more options

Trying to sync my work computer, obviously I do not have my home computer at work or vice-versa. Instructions for setting up sync require you to have both computers handy, even if you click on I don't have access to my device, you are still required to get a key from the other device?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Seriously? Who thought that one up? How do I set up sync WITHOUT another device.

You only need the email address and the password that you used to set up the Firefox account to connect another device to the Sync account.

I have the latest version of Firefox. The email and password is no longer an option to sync. You get the choice of a key or the code.

Firefox 28 and lower use the old Sync version with the separate Sync key, but that version is outdated and no longer supported. So you should update Firefox to the current 35.0.1 release and move over to the new Sync.

The new Sync version used in current Firefox releases is completely different than the version that was previously used. You enter the name and password of the Firefox account on each computer to connect to the Sync account. With the new Sync version used in current Firefox releases you enter the name and password of the Firefox account on each computer to connect to the Sync account.

The currently used new Sync version still use the Sync key to encrypt data locally before uploading, but this Sync key is generated internally from the password of your Firefox account, so you no longer need to worry about it. This means that the Sync key changes when you change the password of the Firefox account and you lose all data stored on the Sync server when doing that.
