Which items are you trying to clear?

Try to disable one at a time to see if that helps to narrow down the problem.

I've reduced it to B & D history and Cache; that seems to work much better. I believe I was just being impatient with the time it was taking and proceeded to click again and again and thereby locking up the job.

Clearing Cookies can cause problems because Firefox also asks plugins to clear their cookies.
