unable to attach desktop files to outgoing emails when attachment function activated

dcbutcher

when composing outbound email message ATTACH key is at top right hand corner of screen. If attachment is required and ATTCH key is clicked choice of File(s) or Webpage shows. If File(s) option is clicked Home -File Explorer comes up from which required file can be selected. This function has recently ceased to work. How can I reactivate the ATTACH function? Please assist, thank you, Chris

This is a known bug. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2077526

Beyond drag and drop there is another workaround:

  • At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button ≡ > Settings > General
  • Scroll down to the bottom and click 'Config Editor'.
  • Search for the preference mail.compose.attach.dir.
  • The value (Path) here must be changed to one that is still available (for example C:).
  • Restart Thunderbird.

That should fix it.

Thank you christ 1 - followed your bullet points but need further explanation please re 4th bullet point. How do I change the value (Path). Meantime drag and drop has worked. If this is a known bug does Mozilla intend to fix it?

You simply change the value for the mail.compose.attach.dir pref. It currently has an invalid path, i.e. one which doesn't exist anymore, which is causing the problem. Replace that invalid path with something known good (e.g. C:) by clicking the Edit button at the right (with the pencil symbol).
