Firefox has tens of entries in the task list even after I close the pages.
When my system slows down and takes forever to download, I go to task manager and find 15-20 entries for Firefox when I have only 1 or 2 pages open. Why are they continuing to pile up and slow down my machine and how do I stop it from happening?

You have not attached any troubleshooter logs so it's hard to guess but most of the times the answer for the amount of processes is addons.
There are several components that deliberately run in isolation from anything else so for most people ~10 processes for empty browser and ~15 for a couple of tabs is usually the expected number.
You can restart into Troubleshoot Mode (from Help menu) to see if launching without extensions and similar makes the number lower for you.
