what version of firefox should I be using? I currently have 115.38 Oesr (64 bit) on my old iMac. Sometimes I am asked to upgrade.

You appear to be running the old EOL macOS 10.13. As a result you cannot run Firefox 116.0 or later as the Firefox 115.38.0esr is the most current version of Firefox you can run on macOS 10.13.
If you can update your macOS to 10.15 or later then you can run current Firefox 153 Release and Firefox 153 ESR.
