Cannot delete messages

blackthebootblack

I have tried the procedure outlined in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cannot-delete-messages#thunderbird:win11:tb152 several times. The account in question is a POP account. The procedure creates a Trash folder that I can see in File Explorer. However it doesn't show up in Thunderbird and i cannot delete any messages in this account.

Here is how I got to this point: I was deleting a two messages that Bitdefender had found were infected. The messages disappeared but so did the Trash folder. I know the infected messages are there somewhere because Bitdefender keeps reporting them. Now I can neither locate these deleted messages nor delete any other message in this account.

Hello blackthebootblack,

I understand you're convinced that Bitdefender has removed some attachments which it has deemed as unsafe. Remember you have an account with your ISP regardless if using pop server and SMTP through a client such as Thunderbird. I would recommend logging into your account via your isp's webpage checking mail and deleting from there for starters.

Secondly if you ran a utility such as CCleaner it does clear temporary caches of email clients rather than manually going in and trying to delete them.

You can also clear any history in Bit Defender from your view through the Bell icon however it will automatically clear in 30 days.

You also can delete any folder in the folder tree and recreate one.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

Thank you

This forum is full with reports about anti-virus software messing with Thunderbird mail files, i.e. corrupting mail files, and in the worst case causing data loss.

These are some generic suggestions to avoid problems with anti-virus software.

Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_how-to-find-your-profile

Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.

Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.

Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.

Keep it working. https://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird

And last but not least, backup your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile
