Although Firefox for Android has support for PWA websites in general,I see that it doesn't detect all pwa websites and creates a simple shortcut instead! For example go to mytuner-radio.com and try to install it as a Pwa, it just creates a shortcut!

If you try this on other browsers like Vivaldi for Android, it installs it as an app, without the need to open the whole browser alongside all the tabs, every time you tap on its icon !

Please fix this and make all sites that support pwa detectable !

Generally, as I said, it's developer's responsibility to declare that their website can be a PWA. However, I've reached out to the team with this and they opened bug 2020304 to consider providing a default PWA experience.

Hi, what did drive you to the conclusion that PWAs are supported in Firefox for Android?

Hey Denys, If you go for example to Instagram and tap the menu in Firefox, the option "add app to Home Screen" appears! Isn't this pwa ?

Well... I was pretty sure it's different from PWA, but now I'm less sure :D Let me double-check

One clue is the option name: for Instagram it's "Add app to Home screen", and for the website from your question it's just "Add to Home screen".

As far as I understand, we indeed support PWAs on Android, but only for the websites with Web App Manifest properly set. So in the end it depends on a website.

Progressive Web Apps mean exactly that, websites can be installed as a form of an app and not just a simple shortcut! That way you can use them as an app and when you tap the icon it doesn't bring up the whole browser along all your tabs!

That's exactly what I'm saying! Firefox doesn't have support for all Pwa's! One example is the one I sent http://mytuner-radio.com/ when you go in it with Firefox no option to add as an app to Home screen appears! But there are many others like even Amazon, Firefox doesn't detect the pwa and it doesn't let you install it as an app! Now try with Vivaldi browser and you'll see the option appears! Can you please forward this to the developers so they can fix this ? Pwa compatibility is a serious feature! Thanks in advance, and thanks for taking the time to check all the above 🙏🏻

Ok but what made me question is how is it possible to have them as pwa on other browsers but not on Firefox! Doesn't this mean that the website already has pwa compatibility? Anyway thank you for passing it on 🙏🏻

As far as I understand (I'm not an expert on this topic, though), it's easy to provide a single-tab experience (as Chrome does) for any website. This doesn't require anything from the website side. We're just not forcing it currently.

Ohh ok ! It's just I noticed this on many websites (like amazon and other major ones) and that they could be installed as a pwa on chromium based browsers so I thought it's on Firefox side to fix this (I'm not an expert either,it's just this feature is very useful for me to quickly glance at a few websites without opening the whole browser)! Anyway thank you again for mentioning it to the Devs and I hope support will be added soon if possible! Should I close the thread now as solved or leave it until it is fix?

I've already marked my response above as a solution, so we're all set :D It's better to have it like this, because there's unfortunately no timeline for the feature implementation (even the decision is not taken yet...)

I see ! No problem! I hope they will consider it! Thank you for all of your help, 🙏🏻 Have a great day!
