I wanted a phone no. so I could call. Today Thunderbird decided to no longer accept my password and there is no route for getting to Thunderbird to find the problem or get another accepted password. There is no phone number and never has been. Thunderbird is a free product. This help forum is also free and so is the advice. Other users from all around the world voluntarilly offer their time to help other users.

If you are talking about the normal password that is used to access the server to download/send emails from a mail account, then Passwords are created or reset in the webmail account for the email address, not in Thunderbird.

It is not Thunderbird that does not like the password. Thunderbird will use the stored password that you set it up to use, but it is the server that does not like it for some reason.

Suggest you try to logon to your webmail account via a browser using your username and password because the password just might be ok. But if that fails, then use the 'Forgotten password' link and follow the instructions. Once you have reset the password for your webmail account, then you can use that new password for pop/imap account in Thunderbird when it tries to access the server.

But it would help if you could offer some info as it might help to work out why the stored password is no longer being accepted. For example gmail occasionally will deliberately block accounts that do not use Authentication Method: OAuth2 which forces them to logon to the server via webmail. The password is perfectly ok, but settings need to be reset just to get it all working again.

Did this suddenly happen when you updated to version 78.2.2 ? What OS are you using eg: Windows 10, MAC, Linux ? What version of Thunderbird are you using? What server are you trying to connect to? In Thunderbird is it a pop or imap mail account which is having the problem?

I have been using Windows 10 for more than a year. I don't know the pop or imap. I just tried to open my Thunderbird email and it is now asking me for the master password. It never asked for master before. The password I have been using, which thunderbird has somewhat frequently asked me for a couple of times a day before, but it never asked for master and it always accepted my password. There is no "forgotten password" avenue shown. That's why I am asking for help. I need help if I need to change settings.

My Google web browser and access to gmail through the browser uses the password I have also stored in Thunderbird months ago. For the last 3 days, Thunderbird has said the password was not recognized by pop.gmail.com. Yet, I can log into Google with the proper password and into Google email directly from Google on the web and from the GMAIL app on my Android phone and tablet using the password that worked until 3 days ago on Thunderbird. Only TB fails to make the connection. What can I do?

I have a similar problem. I downloaded the new Thunderbird 78, and now it does not recognize the password I have used for many years. So I changed the password. Still no luck. So I made a master password. Still no luck. Any suggestions for getting Thunderbird to recognize my original password or a new password?

If you use GMAIL - POP or IMAP that uses Authentication Method : 'Normal Password' then Gmail will periodically deliberately block you because they have switched off your 'less secure apps' option on purpose. This forces you to logon to the gmail webmail account and reselect the 'less secure apps' option. Unfortunately Thunderbird has no control over gmail doing this to you. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

This is because gmail would prefer you to use IMAP and Authentication Method: OAuth2.


Hellodave100 re: I downloaded the new Thunderbird 78, and now it does not recognize the password I have used for many years. Version 78 changed the minimum TLS protocol to TLSv1.2. If the server you are using does not use the latest for the POP/IMAP account then you will need to change the minimum level in the preferences. See info here:

RE: So I changed the password. You can only change the password via the webmail account and then delete the stored one in Thunderbird, then restart Thunderbird and enter new password at the prompt. Note: Recently some servers, eg: AT&T, have made changes regarding passwords used in third party email clients that now require that you use a secure mail key. This means you would enter the secure mail key instead of the normal password. https://www.att.com/support/article/email-support/KM1240308/ Your server may require that change.

RE: So I made a master password. Why? A master password just means you need to enter a password to see your stored passwords. It's a basic method of keeping out prying eyes getting access to passwords. However, the latest Thunderbird now has an additional level of security eg: Windows OS - it will ask you to enter the computer 'User Account' password in order to see stored passwords.
