I've been using Thunderbird for years now and never had this problem until one of the last updates. Windows 10 Pro Version 1909 Build 18363.657 Thunderbird 68.5.0 32-bit (running on 64-bit system, is this an issue?) Server Type: IMAP Server Name: imap.mail.yahoo.com Server setting: Empty Trash on Exit = checked Trash does not empty on exit.

Again, never ever have I had this issue until recently, is it a bug or........ Regards Jer

Help/Troubleshooting, click Open Folder to open the profile folder, close TB. Open the ImapMail/<imap.mail.yahoo.com> subfolder and delete or rename Trash and Trash.msf. Restart TB and move a message to the new Trash folder that is automatically created. Does it empty when TB is closed?

There shouldn't be any issues with running 32-bit TB on 64-bit Windows, and there's no significant performance gain by running TB 64-bit.

@ sfhowes

Thanks for the response......

However, after following your instructions, the trash does not empty.

Interestingly though (refer to the attached image), there are 2 trash cans. One is (I assume) linked to the imap , and the other is linked to the local folder (not sure what this is), but if I move a message to the local folder/trash and close/reopen TB the trash is empty, but ONLY in the local folder location, the other trash folder still has e-mail in it.

Any other suggestions are welcome......

Tools/Account Settings, select Server Settings for the account. What do you have for 'When I delete a message' and the target folder?

"When I delete a message:

Move to this folder: Trash on "my e-mail address"

There was a bug report with a similar problem, but the cause seems to be unknown. I can't suggest any way to fix this, but the simple step of changing the target to Trash on Local Folders, restarting TB, and changing it back to Trash on the IMAP server, might jolt the settings to the correct action.

In Tools/Options/Advanced/General/Config. editor, there should be a preference mail.server.serverN.empty_trash_on_exit that is true. where N = 2,3,... depending on the account. mail.server.serverN.name is the Account Name.

This: mail.server.serverN.empty_trash_on_exit

Does not exist in my config menu.....

Thanks for the efforts, hopefully they will fix the issue.

the N will be a number. so it will be mail.server.server1.empty_trash_on_exit or mail.server.server2.empty_trash_on_exit

or any number after. I have accounts up to 36

If you want to determine the number used by the account, go to the troubleshooting information on the help menu. You accounts are all listed there with a number.

Does you trash empty if you chose to right click a specific trash folder and select empty?

the N will be a number. Understood. So I changed it from true to false but it made no difference. Does you trash empty if you chose to right click a specific trash folder and select empty? Yes.
