My inbox crashed. How could I get the old messages again? I marked them as unread on server but still it won't download.

Thunderbird has an upgrade yesterday. It restarted but my inbox crashed. I can only view messages received after the upgrade. Old messages were all messy. I tried to resolve it by marked all the old messages as unread and hope the thunderbird would get the message again but it won't. How could I now get my old messages?

right click the inbox and select properties and then the repair button. My guess is the c rash has corrupted the local index and that will fix it.
