security certificate not found no messages being sent or recieved

When trying to send or receive messages I get an error message to the effect

Could not verify this certificate because the issuer is unknown. Issued to Common name mail.btinternet.com etc.

Issued by Common name avast! Web/Mail Shield Root Organisation avast! Web/Mail Shield


Any ideas? I can access my emails via webmail
