Thunderbird sends replies but won't send new messages

Thunderbird has suddenly stopped sending new emails although it has worked fine previously and no settings have been changed. If I reply to an email then the reply will send but not if I compose a new email. A copy appears in the sent items folder, so to all intents and purposes it looks as though the email has sent, but the recipient doesn't receive it.

Does anyone know why replies would send when new emails won't?

Technically there is no difference between sending a new message, and replying to a received message. When there's a copy of the sent message in the Sent folder, the message has really been sent. You'd need to have the recipient check what's going on at his/her end, e.g. like checking the spam folder. I suppose you do not receive any kind of delivery failure notification?

Thanks for responding.

I don't think the problem's at the recipient's end because I've tried sending to my son's Hotmail address and my work email with the same result. Replied emails are received but no trace of the new ones.

Do you think this could be an ISP issue?

Yes, it could be an ISP issue. So it would probably be a good idea to talk to your email provider. The same goes for the recipient.
