Thunderbird is not letting me delete messages on Mac

I followed the instructions to delete the trash file that may have been corrupted, however I am unable to do that. I dragged the delete messages folder to the trash on my MacBook and then emptied the trash but it just came back into the folder. Now when trying to delete messages in Thunderbird they appear in the trash but are not deleted from the Inbox.
