In the TOOLS/OPTIONS/PRIVACY tab I need to change the setting to USE CUSTOM SETTINGS FOR HISTORY. I choose this & click on "ok", but it doesn't "stick". When I go back to check the setting, it has reverted to the default setting. What am I doing wrong?

The problem is an error message I receive when I try to open Sony's e-book store to purchase a book for my Sony e-reader. The book store won't open because the proxy server is incompatible with cookie. Firefox recommends I make the change I describe above to resolve this problem.

Firefox shows the "(Never) Remember history" choice if all the history and cookie setting are the default.
Make at least one change to the default setting if you want "Use custom settings for history" to stay selected.
Otherwise Firefox will revert to "(Never) Remember history" if you return to the Privacy tab.

I followed your advice and it did work. However, it didn't resolve my problem. I still can't access the Sony ebook store. According to Sony, it could be that the firewall doesn't allow SSL communication or one has to set the firewall settings to allow "Reader Library.exe" to access the internet. I have no idea how to do this. Can anyone help?

I'm not familiar with the Sony software. However, it sounds like a stand-alone program that might not actually use Firefox. Even if Firefox is your default browser, it could be tripping up on some IE settings. Does Sony have recommendations for setting your Internet Explorer options?

Edit: Regarding the firewall question, it would depend on whether you use a firewall other than the built-in Windows 7 firewall. This could be part of a security suite (e.g., Norton). Non-Microsoft firewalls sometimes pop up dialogs asking if a particular program should be allowed to communicate with the internet. If you said "no," then you have to go into the program's settings and switch it to "yes."
