Firefox 3.5.15 came with basic google search box, but with w/o its option button and no unintaller listed in Addons.

Open the toolbar Customize mode and drag the Search bar into the Palette.

Thanks. Although that resolved the immediate problem of removing the Google toolbar from view, it does not answer the question of how to remove it from the application itself.
